An example of Clear Pharmaceutical LabelingThis Science Daily article states, “Past research has indicated that inadequate or confusing labeling on packages of over-the-counter (OTC) medications is a likely contributor to many unintentional overdoses, particularly among the elderly population.” By using clear pharmaceutical labeling, you better ensure customer safety.  We previously explored customer safety with regards to counterfeiting and void seals, but today it is all about design.

Accessibility in Label Design

This topic also goes back to the topic of inclusive packaging design. With pharma, the inclusive nature of the label design is having an effect on public health and safety. Enhance information such as correct dosage and ingredients, to eliminate customer confusion between containers. By making your dosage information, name and ingredients the most prominent features, you also eliminate confusion concerning conflicting information the customer is receiving elsewhere. Any prescription bottle is tailored to their care, and so holds the most authority.

Clear Pharmaceutical Labeling

So what do I mean by “clear pharmaceutical labeling?” A pharmaceutical label shouldn’t be overcrowded or provide conflicting information. A fantastic alternative to small font and a text-heavy label is the tri-panel label. It allows you to use multiple panels to provide information. In this case, it also provides more room for using a larger size font as well.

Prevention

What can you do to prevent other pharmaceutical related issues? Let’s go back to accessibility for a second. Adding clear braille to pharmaceutical labels with tactile coating creates more ease with the visually impaired. If the coating is clear, it also won’t affect those visually reading your label.

Take a look at your label. See if there are other potential issues to nip in the bud? Consider testing your label with a wide range of people to see how easy it is to understand. Conduct a five-second test to see what information stands out the most to people.
