History & Facts:
- Observed on the 1st Monday of September.
- Strikes and rallies to protest poor working conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours/pay were done during the late 1800s.
- The “First Labor Day Parade” was in 1882 when 10k workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in NYC.
- The idea of this becoming a holiday was not legalized by congress until 12 years later. Until then, many individual states celebrated or honored it.
- 1894 – Labor Day became a federal holiday.
- Dispute as to whether Peter McGuire or Matthew Maguire founded the holiday.
