Pantone & X-Rite have just announced the Pantone Color of the year for 2021.

This year it is not just one, but TWO colors! They are Ultimate Gray (Pantone 17-5104) and Illuminating (Pantone 13-0647).

This year’s color of the year choice was described as, “A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.” – Pantone

For the last 20+ years, the Pantone color of the year has helped influence product development, packaging, home design, industrial design, and more! To decide the color each year, the panel looks at seasonal trends, color psychology, and color consulting to hypothesize what will affect global brands.

The color “Illuminating” is a light, bright yellow. It is said to bring optimism to the packaging world. While this brighter color does that, along with adding visibility and attention to one’s product, “Ultimate Gray” is versatile and can work just about anywhere. This combination of colors is theorized to be great for design this year since they are “practical and rock-solid” on their own but highlight one another so well.

After this year, every industry has faced new challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These colors of “resilience and hope” make sense for this year’s color, as Eiseman explained above.
