Femininity Emerges As Trend In Packaging Design
by

Femininity Emerges As Trend In Packaging Design

Femininity is projected to be a growing packaging trend in 2018. This tone underlines the growth of pastels, the smoothing of harsh design lines, and fading out of gendered product lines. Femininity is also complex. One person’s image won’t match the next. Complexity is a key attribute to consider when designing your next label. Clichés aren’t cute.

Diamond Wipes Label by Great Lakes Label - femininity of millennial pink resealable label

Millennial Pink

Millennial Pink is a light rosy color which rose in popularity in 2012 and was dubbed Millennial Pink for its prominence with younger demographics by 2016.  While pink is the current color representative of women, it wasn’t always that way, and younger generations are taking note. This allows all genders to embrace the feminine within us all. It also translates to packaging and purchasing choices. Rosy pinks are more commonly being seen as a generational color instead of a gendered color.

Pastels Are On-Trend for Label Design

When Rose Quartz and Serenity were dubbed Pantone’s Colors of the year for 2016, it cemented pastels as on trend. Now, they remain a popular color scheme for brands of all industries. Naturally, the beauty industry uses pastels most and often to evoke a sense of calm. It’s not a packaging design choice that is going away anytime soon.

Peony hand soap label with mirafoil - Great Lakes LabelSoft Lines Conquer Harsh Shapes

We’re seeing harsh lines and shapes taken over by soft lines and shapes. Take a look at the above Peony label which uses MiraFoil to define intricate curving lines of the Peony. Even with the growing prominence of doodles on labels, the soft unpolished nature of the motif shines through.

Fading Out of Gendered Product Lines

Younger generations are blurring the lines when it comes to products allocated by gender, thanks to the pink tax. Instead, younger generations focus on saving money over adhering to gender roles. You may have seen laughable images for “men’s cotton buds,” or “women’s facial tissue.” You may have also noticed that over the past few years, gendered products like these are seen much less frequently. This not a coincidence. It’s also not likely to return unless to counter social norms.

Consider The Complexity of Femininity

Again, clichés aren’t cute. Brands that embrace the diversity of their client base are creating viral videos, powerful imagery, and positive associations. By focussing on enhancing and highlighting the product’s capabilities, you create a more compelling design. Look again at the Peony label. Yes, the pink and soft lines are traditionally feminine. Also, consider how the pink compliments the orange color of the product. Consider the beauty and complexity of the flower motif, and how it reflects the beauty and complexity of the product’s scent. While the feminine is there, it also reflects the appeal of the hand soap.

Labels’ Colors Impact Shopping Online & In-Store
by

Labels’ Colors Impact Shopping Online & In-Store

According to this article by Packaging Europe, colors are the most significant factor in attracting customers to your product. This is good news for creating a compelling design for both e-commerce and in-store shopping.

Enhance Color on Social Media With Vibrant Backgrounds

Regardless of what your label looks like in-store, social media is a challenging arena. Techniques aren’t nearly as engaging in images as they are in person, and most of the time neither is color. With so much other competition and colorful posts, a simple white background doesn’t do as much for your product as a colorful one.

Something to note is the popularity of a brand aesthetic challenging what works for imagery on social media. If a bold background color doesn’t work for your company page, try using a color that pulls out the hues in your label while also adhering to the overall scheme.

Pull Out Colors On Dark or Neutral Labels

For many industries, predominantly white and black color schemes are the norm. Pull out accents with your background by complimenting or contrasting colors used on your label. As you can see by the above image, the blue background pulls out the blue in the title, “Brewhouse,” while it also contacts the orange pumpkin. Use Adobe Color for a free, quick method of finding which color will work best.

Make Vibrant Colors Pop on Bold Label Designs

This label offers vibrant greens and yellows that already pop off the dark brown bottle. Online, however, the colors aren’t as compelling as in real life. Again, use Adobe Color to find what background will pull the vibrant scheme together while making it pop from other posts in the newsfeed.

Not sure how much of a difference labeling techniques make? Check out this blog where we compare the same label with and without various innovative labeling techniques. Even just the digitally altered results will shock you.

Swarm R&D label by Great Lakes Label - gold colors enhanced with foiling and tactile screen

The above Swarm label features a lot of golden yellow hues. First, the background enhances that with a metallic stock. It creates a realistic, rich gold that shines online and off. Then, a tactile screen over the swarm title makes the color glisten in the light in a different way from the stock. While this technique doesn’t wow online, it does in-store. Foiling also creates this beautiful shimmer.

Tell A Story With (Or On) Your Label
by

Tell A Story With (Or On) Your Label

Every company has a story. In fact, every company has many stories. There’s the history of the brand as a whole as well as all the smaller, more specific stories along the way. On top of these personal anecdotes, there are the stories worth sharing that have nothing to do with your brand’s development. Instead, the story’s purpose is to connect with your customers on a deeper level.

So, what kind of stories are we talking about?

There’s story of why the customer is using your product, there’s folklore, and pop culture references that represent your company’s branding. Or, even the story customers make up for your brand when they look at your label. Haptic labeling techniques play a role in bringing this immersive story to life. More on that later…

Even by controlling the story your packaging tells, you don’t control how your customers will interpret it. Instead, you communicate your core principles. You develop an overall impression of the company’s capabilities, focus, and what drives it forward. It connects your brand to your customers on a deeper level right there in the grocery store aisle. Instant impact.

Tell a Story On Your Packaging With or Without Words

Uncle Ray’s potato chips are the perfect example of a brand using packaging space to write a story. Each flavor offers a different piece of the puzzle, enticing customers to buy another bag. Better still, each short story provides a clear picture of Ray and his core values as a business owner. You get to know the person while you get to know the brand.

Stories don’t have to be told with words, however. Take a look at the above R&D label designed by Great Lakes Label. This design features a local photographer’s beautiful image of a lighthouse on one of Michigan’s Great Lakes. Imagine being a Michigan-based customer looking at this label in-store. The picture communicates that the brand supports local artists, is a proud Michigan business, hopes that you, the buyer, will feel relaxed and carefree when drinking. It’s as though you’re at this beach just by using the product.

These three pieces of story-oriented information are communicated with single a glance. That is the power of using impactful imagery. In this case, it’s only effective for Michiganders, but never the less, the principles still apply for a national or international product release.

Add A Linked Story With Technology

QR codes are a free and simple method for linking your customers to content on your website. Instead of telling stories with words, or pictures, tell yours with video. A simple behind the scenes look at how the product their holding was made provides the customer with valuable insight and builds the brand’s relationship with them.

Other innovative labeling technologies such as NFC (Near Field Communication) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) are used to provide customers with a more seamless experience. When NFC is turned on on a customer’s phone, they are automatically linked to the page of your choosing. This happens the second their phone comes in contact with the product’s label. Instead of downloading a QR code reader, the process is streamlined.

How Craft Beer Brands Excel At Storytelling in Their Label Designs

Craft breweries are masters at incorporating storytelling into label design. Take a look at the three Perrin labels above. Do they give you a sense of the company’s brand? Their fun, playful, rebellious style with brewing? Each label is vastly different. Different colors, graphics, art styles. Yet, there’s a connecting thread. The story they’re telling. With clear direction, customers will see the message too. Even on a subconscious level, customers will be drawn to the stories they relate to.

This also means that a broad story isn’t a strong story. Pinpoint what your brand’s principles are and show them off. This may connect to a broad group of people, and each person will interpret it differently, but the message is at least connecting with shoppers. Broad stories lack direction and will attract fewer people.

Use Innovative Labeling Techniques to Enhance Your Story

As the luxury market increases, the use of innovative labeling techniques also increases in popularity. The use of foiling, embossing, or any other technique shows customers that an immense amount of care is put into creating the product. This is why labeling techniques are becoming more popular for handcrafted items as well. Since it’s hard to visualize the impact of various techniques, we’ve created a blog to show you what a difference it makes.

Okay, so what do the below labels tell you? Does this tequila feel expensive? Handcrafted? Unique? Perhaps you’re envisioning a special occasion it would be perfect for. Or, maybe you see a specific person in mind. Someone who would love to open a bottle up as a gift. It’s all about igniting their imagination. Make it so that shoppers can’t resist picking up your product and examining the label.

The techniques support the stories customers see when they look at your product. This is because it elevates your brand and fully encapsulates the appeal to the product. When the labels are effective, so is the ability to connect with your customers with a single glance. It also helps that techniques like MotionCoat and Cast & Cure shimmer in the light.

What story are you telling?

The Power of Using Hashtags on Your Labels
by

The Power of Using Hashtags on Your Labels

Customers are looking to buy from brands that engage and create a personal experience. Social media is the ideal place to foster those relationships and hashtags the key to increasing online engagement. Best yet, the more your hashtags, the more free promotion you get. It takes a little bit of extra commitment from your team to check in with anything posted under that tag, but it’s worth it.

A Simple Approach

Incorporate a simple #ProductName on a secondary label, or inside a booklet-style label, to save space. It tells customers that you’re a brand that cares about them. Then from there, you can gauge what people are saying about your product and make informed decisions about next steps with creating a hashtag campaign. If customers are sharing a lot of selfies with your dog treats, run a contest where you repost the best dog pictures of the month, as long as they also feature your product.

Seasonal & Promotional Hashtags on Your Labeling

Halloween is next month. Challenge your customers to a costume contest! Who has the best cosplay of your brand mascot? Who can incorporate your product into their costume? All that needs to be added to your label is something like #ProductNameHalloweenContest and a brief explanation of how it works and what they get.

When people then post their entries, they will likely use other hashtags that are seasonally trending like #Halloween or #Costume. This increases your visibility to people outside of your network. Again, it’s free promotion. For many people, the idea of a repost is enough of a motivator and so no prize is necessary.

Marketing Campaign Hashtags

Contests do require some cost but are the most effective way of interacting with customers on a larger scale. Offering some of your most popular products in exchange for the best #SummerSelfieWithProductName or #ShareAProductName post is extremely effective. Add the hashtag to your label, and with a brief description ask followers to post an image or a story using your hashtag. Asking for them to be following your page is another effective way of growing your online presence.

When customers share you can gauge their feelings about your brand, get free promotion, get people excited and possibly even increase sales or followers. The golden ticket campaigns food products run is a great example of how contagious the excitement can get. Even people who don’t open their packaging to find a golden ticket are posting images about it and engaging with the brand. Again, this is where liking posts and responding to comments is key.

Metallic Stock Glistens in Light

Learn more about metallic stock and the various ways it can be used in any industry. No matter what aesthetic your brand uses, this labeling stock enhances design features to work with your look. Check out how some of our clients used it! Or, take a look at how metallic stock pairs with other innovative labeling techniques we offer.

Metallic Stock as a Design Feature

Although this Monrovia label is blank, the message is clear. The branded colors are spot on, and the design is minimalistic allowing the stock to really catch the light and catch customers’ eyes. The look is neutral enough that any plant with any color of blooms will stand out. What’s great about using metallic stock is that any color can be printed over top, allowing branded colors to match perfectly.

Subtle Elegance

This Plot 88 wine label uses metallic stock in a much more subtle way. For luxury products, this matte look still allows the stock to shine but isn’t flashy enough to detract from the over aesthetic. The simple gold and red also provide a royal touch, emphasizing the luxuriousness. As the luxury market increases, so will the popularity of this label stock.

These other Monrovia plant labels use metallic stock to highlight the details in the design. It incorporates green, gold and purple shimmer to match branded colors and create a striking look. Customers will be doing a double take when walking by these plants.

As you can see, incorporating metallic stock in whole product lines offers a subtle cohesive touch. The main color used on the label changes, but the shining details remain.

Should You Be Labeling Product Reviews?
by

Should You Be Labeling Product Reviews?

Label & Narrow Web posted the article, “Use labels to showcase customer reviews” in their July/August issue. It proposes that brands provide customers with product reviews right there on the packaging. Use QR codes that link to Google or Facebook reviews. But is it worth the valuable space?

isle of products - should product reviews be incorporated?

A Case For Labeling Product Reviews

The above grocery aisle view can be overwhelming for customers. That’s exactly why we wrote the blog “10 Things Your Competitors Can Teach You About Labeling” in the first place. It’s difficult to stand out and leave a good first impression. Reviews allow customers to see how satisfied others are with the product. It confirms that you offer them a quality item by using unbiased views.

You have options for how these reviews could be incorporated. While incorporating basic text, or even a QR code that links to reviews, NFC labeling keeps reviews off of your label design. This technology allows customers to link to your reviews by holding up their phones to the label. It does not need any graphic or text to be printed on the label, letting your design shine.

A Case Against Labeling Product Reviews

As mentioned, you limited labeling space is valuable. Not only that but regulatory and mandatory information crowding your label, things can get crowded fast. With minimalism still being a hot trend in packaging, why add another element?

NFC is a great option, but you also need to guarantee your reviews are always going to be good, or that your customer service team will professionally handle negative reviews. As mentioned in the Label & Narrow Web article, negative reviews can turn into positive experiences when handled correctly. But say your company has the misfortune of a recall. Suddenly new and negative reviews will be pouring in while the linked labels on other products are connecting people to unfortunate feedback.

How Luxury Packaging is Becoming Approachable
by

How Luxury Packaging is Becoming Approachable

This article by BXP discusses the various ways that the luxury industry is changing. As the market increases, it makes sense that customer demographics are changing, and so are their needs. By updating your concept to make it more approachable, your products will find a new audience and delight customers.

luxury and approachable candle labels

Approachable Social Media Influencers

It’s not about what you own, it’s the lifestyle. Social media influencing goes beyond celebrity endorsements. Instead, these days fashion bloggers are as crucial to gaining consumer loyalty. Also, making your label beautiful is critical for increasing sales. In short, make your product Instagramable and impossible to ignore.

As the rise of Apple products began, so did sharing unboxing videos of their products. Younger customers follow brands that incorporate the broader picture of a lifestyle. It comes back to wanting to invest money into brands that consider what will happen after the point of sale.

Luxury is Value

As smart packaging gains popularity and younger generations take to personalized shopping experiences, luxury products become more about value gained from a product. Luxury packaging can and should go beyond beautiful art and innovative techniques. Personalization takes it a step further and incorporates quality into the packaging design.

Customize your labels to connect with customers and also enhance the user experience. Incorporating customer names has become popular with the rise of personalized coke labels. Custom shampoo that is built specifically for your haircare needs is rising in popularity as well. This trend even goes beyond simple name swaps on digitally printed labels. If creating custom products for every customer is out of reach, create packaging suited for specific locations. Cultural references play into lifestyle approach of marketing.
