Get Inspired: Fragrance Packaging With Foiling

Oftentimes cosmetic packaging is synonymous with luxury style. These labels ooze luxury with one classic labeling technique. Foiling. We previously looked at cosmetics as a whole with foiling. Now we’re focussing in on fragrance packaging with foiling.

L’Artisan Perfume Label & Packaging

L’Artisan Fragrance Packaging With Foiling Designed By Anja Bošnjak

This fragrance distills its fragrance down to an emotion. The emotion shown, which translates to “I radiate,” utilizes warm tones. The foiling on the bottle label is even more fitting considering the theme. The minimalistic label creates an elegant touch. The logo being foiled creates a luxury design. Having “Je rayonne” foiled would create a cohesive look this high-end product.

FORTEM Perfume Designed By Dang Vo & Yen Vy Vo

The goal of this project was to design a luxury perfume package using unconventional objects. Obviously, the inspiration, in this case, comes from nuts and bolts. The gold details on both the package and the label create a strong, sophisticated look. The label is small and minimalistic. This ultimately creates more of a color pop between the gold background and the black bottle. While the above example is delicate, this product exudes boldness. This is the perfect example of the flexibility of foiling.

Black Magic Cosmetic Line Designed By Christine Hall

Black Magic uses Wiccan/mystic motifs to create a dynamic line. The foiled lid on the small container is a perfect example of how foiling can compliment fragrance packaging design. While the package itself may or may not feature foil, this label adds a pop of color from the other end of the color wheel. Including foiling on the label of the product would not only compliment this lid, but break up the violet.

Should Labels Be Designed to be Repurposed?

Should Labels Be Designed to be Repurposed?

The repurposed packaging for the Moana doll takes sustainability to the next level. On top of using 70% recycled paper and being printed with vegetable-based inks, it was also designed without tape or glue. This allows for pieces to come apart easily. Another incredible packaging feat is that it also turns into a boat! See the below video to watch this transformation in action.

This begs an interesting question. While important conversation regarding sustainable packaging and anti-packaging is happening, could there be yet another alternative?  It is possible to begin creating labels that serve more than one use and consider the customers’ values?

Ever improvise a spoon by using the lid of your yogurt or pudding container? This solution could work in a similar way, but done with intent and effectiveness. This would be smart labeling designed to improve your overall product experience.

The Anti-Packaging Movement

The anti-packaging movement is growing due concern over wasteful packaging and labeling. If it is possible to create useful packaging and labeling that extends its life, there could be convenience and value in this concept worth pursuing. Similar to reusable grocery bags, finding a new purpose for labels could revitalize this changing industry.

Repurposed Promotional Labels

One example is the promotional label. Using labels that double as coupons is an effective way to give your packaging a second purpose, and, this method saves on printing coupons then distributing them through other channels.  This method is good for the consumer since it is more environmentally friendly, and is good for the brand considering the cost-effective marketing strategy. Who doesn’t like a win-win solution?

The Future

It doesn’t end here! Besides an extra constructible children’s toy and a voucher, there are unlimited opportunities for creating smarter, more sustainable packaging.  Create reusable products, such as a growler, to keep your branding relevant in this ever-changing, and greener world.

All About Mirafoil, Cold Foil & Hot Stamp
by

All About Mirafoil, Cold Foil & Hot Stamp

There are significant differences between Mirafoil, Cold Foil and Hot Stamp. Not only are the processes different, but so are the results. Find out which option is right for your label.

The Cold Foil Process

As seen below, the adhesive is first applied to the plate. The foil is then applied and cured with ultra-violet light. What’s left is the metallic design on your label. With cold foiling, you choose between using gold, silver or red foil stock. If you want any other color for your cold foiling details, it must be added overtop of the silver foiling.

Cold Foil process step one

 Cold Foil process step two

Cold Foil process step three

The Hot Stamp Process

For the difference between cold foil and hot stamp, see our previous blog!

The MiraFoil process

MiraFoil is applied the same way color is. Sweet and simple. As seen below, it rolls on to the plate and voila! Looking for variance? To add any PMS color, print over the foil with another plate. This creates your one of a kind label.

What’s the difference between the two? Or, which one is right for your label?

A Case For Inclusive Packaging Design
by

A Case For Inclusive Packaging Design

You’ve put a lot of thought into the design of your product. The labeling and packaging are key elements to being seen on the grocery store shelf after all. Have you thought much about inclusive packaging along the way?

First, what is inclusive packaging?

Not everyone has an easy time opening up various packages, or reading small fonts. It’s not just about creating packaging and labels that the elderly can open and understand with ease, but children, those with disabilities and the abled bodied as well. What is your product worth if a large corner of the market finds it inaccessible?

inclusive packaging shelf

Of course if the product is meant to be safely out of the hands of children, accommodations should be made. If the product is meant for all to use, however, accessibility should be a priority. The trendy minimalistic style you desire for your label can still be achieved with larger font. The drink can still be tightly shut with an easy to open lid. The colors used in your design can still have enough contrast so that everyone can clearly understand the content.

While excessive packaging is an issue for those considering environmental consequences, it could also be an issue here. The less packaging there is, the easier it is for the customer to start using your product. What can be eliminated, or reimagined, in order to create a more efficient experience? As time goes on and more developments are made in the packaging material industry, the more options you have. That being said, starting with smart design can be just as effective while we wait for those innovations.

One simple example how you can make your products more accessible is by including braille. Any embossing or tactile screen can create the desired effect on your label. It enhances the label design as well as the ease of access for everyone.

Produce Packaging Makes Customers Lose Interest
by

Produce Packaging Makes Customers Lose Interest

According to scientists at Wageningen University in Wageningen, Netherlands, customers are uninterested in produce packaging. When fresh fruit and vegetables go packaging free, sales increase. This is due to the ease of checking ripeness and environmental concerns. A customer wants to know they are putting their money where their morals are.

So, what can you do with produce packaging?

As we mentioned in a previous blog on anti-packaging, this will likely not be the end of the packaging industry. With edible packaging in development and water dissolvable labels, the item can retain it’s freshness longer or be more accessible to be checked. This also means that customers have access to labeling regulations. It even provides extra space for more information.

no produce packaging

GMI labeling laws keep developing, which requires labeled produce. If this ends up being the case, finding a compromise between the anti-packaging movement and the current standards will be crucial. As mentioned above, there may even be edible packaging that could aid in this transition.

On top of all of this, better utilize the small labels fruit use. It’s small real estate, but an important one. Instead of packaging the produce, the label then conveys further information on proper handling. Or, use the label to display the harvest date or even the date it arrived in store.

Why is it important?

Creating transparency between the customer and business is important. Customers are looking for products that align with convenience, freshness and ethical procedures. This could be an opportunity to take their concerns and transform it into yet another reason to buy your produce.

La Carpa Wine Label Design By Liza Chernyak

This wine label, designed with South Africa’s wildlife in mind, is unique in many ways.  The bright colors reflect the vibrancy of the country.  The style of drawing and the colors match perfectly to create an effective, stylish label that reflects modern luxury. The use of pattern is unlike most designs showcasing animals. It makes the viewer want to go in for a closer look, and explore the details of each figure.

This truly unique packaging concept not only creates a dynamic label but the corresponding packaging as well. The minimalist label featuring leopard motif perfectly compliments the busy wilderness, exposed once the box gets opened up. A clear stock is a base for this pressure sensitive label. This provides the unique matte black bottle with more space to contrast the lime colored cougar.

The deer is ideal for this specific label considering the town of Llano, Texas, known as the deer capital of the state. Utilizing local culture is a fantastic way to draw attention to your label, especially with locals. The deer’s long, slender shape also creates an appropriate silhouette for the long, slender wine bottle. The elegant animal motif also compliments the elegant design itself.

Get Inspired: Fragrance Label Design

While fragrance containers come in intricate, bold designs, the labels themselves can be just as eye-catching. These are some fragrance designs that will take sophistication to the next level.

La Libellule Perfume

La Libellule Perfume Packaging Design By Marta Chodorowska

The simplicity of this label is key. The brand is the only aspect to the design of the label. This minimalism ultimately creates a sophisticated look and it also draws the attention toward the unique bow feature. What is particularly helpful about this design is that it can be easily replicated for other scents in this line. With French inspiration, this classic look is key.

Similar to the first example, this label primarily features the brand logo. Almeida states, “They are basic toiletries, light versions of exquisite essences, that will carry you to a glamorous and sophisticated holiday destination, with vintage air. The fragrances are chic and casual, the elegance of simplicity, luxury in it’s lightweight and informal style.” The minimalistic packaging concept does just that. The packaging of the boxes are also a great way to add flare to the product while keeping the bottle itself looking elegant.

Unlike the previous examples, this fragrance label utilizes heavy pattern. Each graphic inside the design represents a scent used in the perfume. The ergonomic shape of the bottle makes for easy holding as well. The glass container makes it easier to recycle, a feature that would be on brand with The Body Shop. Not only does this label make you lean in for a closer look, the packaging provides you with yet another reason to take it home.

Hot Stamp Makes Labels Shimmer
by

Hot Stamp Makes Labels Shimmer

Hot stamp is a method that creates an outstanding foil look for your label. This technique can be used in a variety of ways for your flexographic printed label.

Perfect for Titles

Brewhouse beer - Great Lakes Label

As seen on this R&D beer label, Brewhouse, the hot stamp foiling is used over the title. This color scheme also compliments the title’s look well. It leaves a lasting impact and unifies the art as a whole. As you can see, there are other techniques used such as motion coat and grit coat, but hot stamp works brilliantly in combination with other techniques.

Bourbon Red - Great Lakes Label

Color Variety

Hot stamp can be done in a variety of colors. That is why this technique is the perfect option for titles. No matter the size, or shape of the title, or even the stock of the label, hot stamp will be easily applied. It is an eye-catching addition to any label.

Shipwreck wine label - Great Lakes Label

Emphasize Images With Hot Stamp

It doesn’t only have to be applied to titles! It can also be used to emphasize certain characteristics of your design as seen in this R&D beer label, Swarm. While the color scheme falls on the yellow side of the color wheel, the wings of the bee add an extra touch.

swarm beer label - Great Lakes Label

This is a great option for any label because of it’s versatility in design. Whether you are looking for a classic touch on your wine label or a modern twist for your food label, this technique will provide you with the style you’re looking for.

How Will Gen Z Impact Packaging?
by

How Will Gen Z Impact Packaging?

As we have already explored, shopping is heading online and we may continue to see this pattern grow with Gen Z.  We’re already seeing that this is a generation who is connecting to YouTube personalities and their products. Their shopping habits may be online, but also require a more personal touch.

Some YouTube personalities sell products like monthly subscription boxes, phone apps and games as well as books, clothing lines and cosmetics. These young shoppers build a connection with the content creators before buying their products. They take the concept of friendly businesses to the next level.

We’re already at a stage where businesses are encouraged to be more open, transparent and personal with their customers. It’s looking like this culture will continue to grow.

So, how will this affect labeling?

The more businesses require a personal touch, the more packaging itself will require something more personal as well. We’ve seen that the Coca-Cola labels with names was a huge success, and with the rise of digital printing, more individual packaging may grow. QR codes are also still very useful on labels, but the shoppers may be looking to use these codes for a more personal experience.

Imagine this…

You’re a beauty vlogger. As you are releasing your new cosmetic line, you can now create unique labels that are as individual as your viewers. You can also add a QR code to your packaging that links the shopper to an unlisted video tutorial on how to apply your product. Thus creating a full circle between marketing and packaging.

By creating an unlisted video your viewers can only access through your product, you are also creating another incentive for your viewers to become shoppers. The video also creates that personal touch that Gen Z may be looking for. The video shows that not only is the product designed to help them, but the labeling is as well. The content creator has the viewers’ best interest at heart in every step of the way.

The best part?

This isn’t just for YouTubers. Any business can take these strategies to create a truly unique experience.

Get Inspired: Warm Colors In Design

Today, we’re looking at warm colors in packaging design because it is officially autumn! You may even see promotional labels starting to become more common with festive color schemes. Grab yourself a pumpkin spice latte and get inspired with these innovative packaging and labeling designs.

Similar to the changing colors of the foliage, this packaging has warm hues fading into each other. What’s particularly fascinating, is that the angle of each package reflects the degree of sun protection. There is also an element of minimalistic design. Altogether, these elements add up to a dynamic, bold design that demands attention.

Since the monarch butterfly population is depleting, this jar is designed to bring them back. Monarchs need milkweed to survive and with milkweed not being grown, this product allows families to grow the plant themselves. The label includes a simplified design of a monarch. This image has a crafty look to it, as though it was constructed using paper mache. This furthers the branding of the product and implies milkweed is as easy as do it yourself craft.

The inspiration for this design was the products themselves. The colorful nature of the spices inspired Melo to create seamless labels that utilize these warm tones. The pattern of the design also corresponds to the region that the spice originates. The shape of the container allows label placement on lids, sides, and bottoms, which also provides more room to include required labeling information. All in all, the dynamic style of Margão is an effective way to package spices that customers want to bring home and proudly display on countertops.
