Consider Your Consumers As Your Marketers
by

Consider Your Consumers As Your Marketers

This article from Packaging Europe touches on the ways modern consumers influence packaging design. This Biz Community article considers the same prospect but also examines the ways in which packaging creates experiences for customers. So, by designing the product’s packaging with a wider view in mind,  you create a full experience for customers, not just a protective casing for your item.

How exactly are consumers your marketers?

Shoppers have always spoken about the products they love, but these days it’s also done on a public online stage. So, take advantage of it. As a result of creating beautiful and helpful packaging, you’ll get customers who market it. Yes, even go above and beyond the competition. Don’t just offer a product, build that experience.

Social Media Influencing

Obviously social media has completely changed the marketing landscape. Now when people like your product they also promote it on their social media pages. The brands they like almost inform the brand influencers build for themselves. So, make your packaging worthy of the product placement. Not only do you have the option to pay influencers to promote your product, but fans will create their own user-generated content for you when they’re excited to show it off. Artistic packaging makes it far easier for the later to enthusiastically occur.

Word of Mouth and Blatant Recommendations

Online and off, an unbiased recommendation from someone you know is a very convincing way to try something new. So, when you create packaging that goes above and beyond to serve customers, they’ll post online reviews, discuss their experience in person, and even post positive comments on your social media pages. This type of engagement must be earned through value. Shoppers need to be inspired, educated, entertained or assisted in using the product to find this level of connection with a brand.

Vegetable-Noodles-Family-with-Label-2The Importance of Brand Values

First, communicate the values your brand holds dear. Even product specific values. This information is communicated through association logos, on-theme product photography, and of course, label copy. Selling vegetable noodles? Communicate that it’s a fresh, healthy, and quality product by using imagery that connects shoppers to a clean, professional restaurant environment. So, whether they realize it or not, they understand the values of the product with a single glance.

So, how do you design a label that looks beautiful enough to enthusiastically promote? Enhance it with labeling techniques. There’s so many to choose from, so consider the purpose they hold. Create more realistic images with embossing and foiling. These classic techniques make your sunshine motif glisten in the light, or your metallic bolt graphics pop off the surface. Then, create a more unique dimension with tactile coatings. Or, leave your competition in the dust by using unique, holographic techniques like Motion Coat and Cast & Cure, seen above. These techniques not only glimmers in the light, but they create nostalgic and positive subconscious connections.

E-Commerce Presentation Can’t Be Shrugged Off

It’s important to find consistency in your in-person and online experience. Shoppers need to easily find your product and your storefront, but they also need to recognize it’s the official page. Consistent branding, copy voice, and imagery help with that.

Plus, how your techniques appear online is crucial. This not only highlights the design elements but offers an authentic, transparent shopping experience. When the product arrives on your customer’s doorstep, they’ll want to know exactly what’s inside.

Booklet-style labels offer more content space to expand on helpful information or to provide translations. Plus, when customers open up the label, it engages the emotions on a haptic level. Now, they are not only delighted by the satisfaction of being able to open up the label, but the information inside provides added value. This is a simple way to even step above your competition and stand out. Offering simple tutorials inside is another way to turn shoppers into your marketers.

Durability in All Conditions

No customer is going to become your marketer when the label is peeling off the container. Use water-resistant labels like The WetStick™ featuring an adhesive chemistry so strong, you can apply labels underwater. Don’t skimp out. Go for quality stocks and labeling options that last well past the grocery aisle. When you don’t invest in quality, loyal customers post undesirable pictures of your disintegrating pool-side label. That’s not very re-postable. So, do yourself and your customers that favor. This also goes for heat resistant labels, using UV inks and on and on.

Labeling Technology

Lastly, labeling technology like NFC (Near Field Communication), QR codes, and even hashtags connect customers to more value. Send shoppers to your custom created video tutorials, blog posts, and apps that offer inspiration, information, and community connection. This goes a long way in finding even more value and longevity with a product. Plus, when the information provides more fulfillment, customers will come back for more. Take the extra step, go above and beyond your competition, and the return on investment will show. Plus, the physical engagement with the packaging engages the senses in a similar way that labeling techniques do. This may just be the very thing that turns your customer into your very own marketer.

Want Your Labels to Astound Customers? Listen to Them.
by

Want Your Labels to Astound Customers? Listen to Them.

Listen, it sounds simple, but it also requires a brand to drop the sales pitch. It means the only agenda is to better understand your customers, and how profitable is that? Well, it’s actually very profitable. By creating labels that excite, and provide value, the more sales there will be. As a result of good design, the relationship between the customer and your brand grows.

Subway Snapchat label with pull tab Great Lakes Label - social media link to listen to customersListen to What Shoppers Are Saying on Social Media

First, ensure you’re keeping up with direct messages or comments on your posts. Consider if negative feedback is truly trolling, or if there’s value to be cultivated. Consider going the extra mile by sending the person a survey to dig deeper into their concerns. See if there’s a way their patronage is valuable to your brand while you also consider their concerns in a controlled manner.

Or, direct customers to your pages and hashtags on your label designs. This way, customers know where to post feedback that will be seen. Of course, this requires maintenance. Ensure you respond to posts as well as like them. Also, remember to search for indirect posts by searching your brand name without the @ or relevant hashtags not necessarily promoted by your brand. For example, we might search for #GLL even if we don’t use that hashtag.

A/B Testing Offers Practical Advice

A/B testing is the process of testing design elements and gathering feedback to create more captivating packaging. By gathering this hands-on feedback, the data makes it easier to provide value to customers. Also, it provides the structure that prevents sales pitches and keeps the focus solely on the customer.

Get Inspired: Spatially Satisfying

Spatially satisfying labels take advantage of the available space to do something pleasant to look at. These label designs don’t get lost in minimalism and they also don’t pack graphics and text in together. They even use unique shapes to enhance the shapes within the shape.

There’s so much fantastic use of shape and space with this label. The repetition of the slanted lines compliments the herringbone style design and the lower left whitespace. Even the slanted nature of the fruit graphics create a cohesive balance. Plus, the lines draw the viewers’ eyes all over the label, taking in each detail.

This beer label beautifully breaks the mold by finding the balance between bold and soft features. The title bursting out of the box is a fantastic example to focus attention on. The lines are soft and fluid while the shadow is angular and deep. This design uses the standard label shape and adds dimension solely with unique graphics.

Unlike the previous two designs, this label uses more traditional lines but creates something beautiful and balanced from them. Even the foiled title draws the eyes down from the crisp, white graphic leaves on top. The flow of the lines in the leaves gets balanced by the angular serif fonts. This label is so timeless that it fits into any setting.  It also makes for easy replication and adaptation for other products in the line.

5 Ways To Design Timeless Labels
by

5 Ways To Design Timeless Labels

Design timeless labels with these 5 key steps. Not only will your packaging emphasize your brand, but it will also allow your product to stand out in the grocery aisle. Best still, create a design that stands the test of time and avoid constant additions or changes to the labels.

This is especially crucial for new businesses needing to create a compelling design they can rely on before it can even be tested. In the early stages, when setting up a business is chaotic, relieve some stress. Simple design doesn’t have to be lackluster. Done right, it is possible to outshine your competition and establish a recognizable brand.

5. Avoid Showcasing Trends

For most industries, it’s simple. Avoid showcasing models or locations that give away the current fashion, beauty, interior design, or automotive trends. In fact, avoid any ever-shifting trends. Stick to what’s tried and true. If your label uses models, make sure their look transcends eras.

Labeling 101 Resource Center blog button Great Lakes Label - high quality

Fashion and beauty products are more difficult. In order to showcase the product, it’s important to highlight why it’s currently relevant. When creating a design that lasts, again, use looks that will stand the test of time. Alternatively, get close. Like, really close. If you’re selling a nourishing hair creme, how much of the model do you really need to see? Keep the hair classicly straight, the makeup simple and the clothes out of frame.

Things become even more difficult if the product itself is trend bound to shift. Say, the label is showcasing the size of the latest and greatest style of jeans. This is where simplicity is key. Instead of using imagery of the jeans, use a close up of the jean material in your label. Or, avoid graphics altogether and create a minimalistic, copy-only label. Let the trendy pair of pants be the focus.

4. Link To Evergreen Content On Your Label For A Consistent Sense of Connection

It’s easier than ever to build a relationship with customers. With labeling technology and social media sharing, incorporating a small graphic or handle on your label goes a long way.

First, build content that will remain relevant to your product for a long time. Create a video tutorial for installing computer software, write a recipe that incorporates your handcrafted sauce, or build an app that reminds you to take your daily dose of medicine. The possibilities are endless. Then, when you design your label, insert a QR code into the design, or add NFC technology to the label. Make it easy for your customers to connect to the personalized content intended to enhance the shopping experience after they take the item home. The consideration and continued interaction builds a bond and brand loyalty.

Encourage customers to share their experiences on social media. Then, engage. When images are posts, reshare the user-generated content onto the company profile. This, in turn, encourages other customers to take pictures with your products. Actively ask for engagement as well. Whether that’s through generating and engaging with reviews of all kinds, or hosting an online contest. The contact after purchase again builds a bond between the brand and the customer, improving the overall experience.

3. Black and White Packaging Is Simple, Yet Luxurious

Black and white labels sound simple, and they are in all the best ways. If you’re looking for a quick-run, digitally printed label that still looks luxurious and classic, work in greyscale. It also is a brilliant design technique for emphasizing classic and vintage products. Even the most subtle product or container colors will pop against the label.

Gaby Cuvee Wine Label with Gold Metallic Foiling and Embossing

2. Use Classic Metallics

Metallic colors like gold and silver never go out of style. For luxury brands, they also emphasize the sophisticated nature of the product. That said, with the luxury market growing, all industries benefit from the use of foiling. There are a few ways to incorporate it into your label design.

Hot Stamp & Cold Foil

Hot Stamp and Cold Foil both provide crisp, vibrant metallics. These techniques are great for larger graphics like the image above. Full disclosure, the Gaby Cuvee label also uses embossing to make the foiling pop even more. So, use foiling alone or in combination with other innovative labeling techniques for an even greater impact.

MiraFoil

MiraFoil is an ink-based foil ideal for precise designs. Are you looking to add foiling to your text? Create sharp, thin lines if need be. Since MiraFoil is ink-based, this means it also can be matched to any Pantone color. So, this makes it possible to foil brand logos in branded color schemes to blend seamlessly with other product lines, yet stand out.

Metallic Stock

Metallic labeling stocks give you the coverage you need. This is a metallic baseline where details (matte or metallic) are printed over top. Metallic stock really shines for minimalistic labels.

1. Timeless Labels Rely on Brand Colors

Nothing is more consistent and timeless than your branded logo and color scheme. Especially when starting out, using the logo and colors all over your packaging makes it easy for customers to recognize and remember your products. Why overthink it? Simple label designs can still be innovative. For resealable or inclusive packaging, add a pull tab. Unique label shapes are another simple, yet impactful way to add interest and engagement to your packaging. Consider the needs of the consumer and product overall.

Review: How Accurate Were Our 2017 Label Trend Predictions
by

Review: How Accurate Were Our 2017 Label Trend Predictions

We made our 2017 label trend predictions this time last year, so it seems only fitting to look back and see how we did.

A Review of Our 2017 Label Trend Predictions

Our 2017 Label Trend Predictions

Packaging Inspired By Nature

Earthy greens and sustainability were top of mind in January 2017. With greenery having been announced as Pantone’s 2017 Color of The Year, the natural textures, colors, and stocks were ideal.

High-End Appeal Design Trends

The luxury market was growing and so was the popularity of innovative labeling techniques. From foiling, to embossing, to holographic shine, the more you could add to a label the better. This trend also meant more use of sustainable and metallic stocks.

Back to Basics

Minimalism has been trendy in design for a while, so naturally, this continued in 2017, right? The less clutter the better. Why overcomplicate things?

So, how did we do?

Packaging Inspired By Nature

Although Greenery was around, and green is a very popular color, there wasn’t an overwhelming increase in its use. Environmental motifs weren’t particularly trendy either. In fact, the opposite end of the color spectrum surged with an increase in popularity for coppers and “millennial pink.”

moya wine label - wine traders - great lakes label

So, what about sustainability in label production and design? That has increased! More label stocks made from recycled content are available, and so FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved stocks.

While our prediction on greenery trending was incorrect, green label stocks did increase in popularity. Current score: 1/1

High-End Appeal Design Trends

Innovative techniques did, in fact, get more popular in 2017. At tradeshows, this was a constant conversation for us. More and more brands are looking for unique ways to highlight their products and stand out from the competition. What was strange, however, is that both luxury and handcrafted products were key drivers.

Our prediction was correct and exceeded our expectations. Current score 2/2

Back to Basics

Minimalism did not grow in 2017. In fact, motifs in design are coming back in a big way.  Labels are still remaining quite uncluttered, but bold colors, intricate details, and large prints are all on the up.

Our prediction was wrong. Final score: 2/3

This year we conducted more research and dived deeper into the trends. Take a look at our predictions for 2018.

Get Inspired: Festive Autumn Labels
by

Get Inspired: Festive Autumn Labels

Autumn labels are everywhere. Considering the recent Halloween promotional packaging, it’s time to find inspiration in the grocery store aisle. Here are some examples of designs that incorporate fall themes which you can also use to inspire your own label designs!

Bonafide ByAmy Nortman

The design reflects homemade baking and is reminiscent of something you would find in your grandmother’s pantry. The vibrant, warm colors also play into the traditional colors associated with the fall season. Even the flavors match those of pies served at a Thanksgiving meal.

The spooky, skeletal design fits perfectly into the season, especially for Halloween. Cider is also a very trendy flavor for fall and the leaf motifs fit well into the design. Again, the colors used in the label design are on the warm side. What’s cool about these labels is the custom die cuts of the top of the skull. Having it pop out the top adds dimension.

Apple Packaging Designed by Linn Gustafsson

Apple Packaging Designed by Linn Gustafsson

The intricate cutouts of the packaging slip are subtle but interesting and tactile for customers. Despite the single color scheme, this packaging entices you to pick it up. The vibrancy of the apple is a stark contrast to the minimalism of the rest of the packaging.  This allows the viewer to quickly understand the contents inside.

As for the autumnal inspiration, this label uses fantastic colors that reflect the dark and dreary time of year. Like the previous design, it evokes a sense of Halloween or even Snow White.

Customer Spotlight: Subway

Customer Spotlight: Subway

We recently talked about pull tabs on resealable labels. Although these labels aren’t resealable, the tab still makes the product more accessible for customers. This past year Subway, the famous sandwich company, completed a major redesign. This even included adding labels to secure sandwich wrappings closed. The labels also feature pull tabs that are designed to make it easier for customers to access their purchase.

Subway Embraces Technology

Take a look at how the restaurant chain is changing up stores to provide a better customer experience. These enhancements include self-order kiosks, WiFi access, and the below label. This label also features a Snapchat QR code to make it easy for customers to connect with them on the social media platform. Once, the point of sale the end of the interaction. Now customers can celebrate World Sandwich Day with their favorite sandwich shop by sharing stories on Snapchat at their locations.

Should You be A/B Label Testing?
by

Should You be A/B Label Testing?

A/B testing is a marketing technique where two versions of the same concept run for small test groups to collect data before making a final decision. Usually, these tests help with e-blasts and websites to see which version got the most opens. Does this technique have value with your packaging?

When Not to Conduct A/B Testing

Since testing is a marketing strategy, it may not work for pharmaceutical labels or any other label that impacts customers’ health. Do not run A/B testing on required copy because, well, it’s required. Instead, larger font sizes or types are a way that labels could play with enhancing the design for customer satisfaction. If the changes only make the package more accessible, it’s worth trying.

How This Technique Can Work For You

digitally printed wine labels by Great Lakes Label - a/b testing

Above are two R&D labels printed for a trade show. These act as a great example of how A/B testing could work. As you can see, the copy remains the same on both labels, except for the name of the product. The color and image convey the same message but are different enough to impact the sale. If you were to run a small batch of both labels and put them up on opposite ends of your vineyard store, data would prove to you which design sells better.

Not Only For Graphics & Copy

This technique can also work with stock and adhesive. Trying to decide between glossy and matte? Weighing durability over a label that’s easy to remove and reseal? Test all options and let the data inform your decision. Instead of going into product development using assumption and personal taste, go into it with customer backed information.

The Difference Between Labels & Stickers
by

The Difference Between Labels & Stickers

Chances are that when you think of stickers you think of stuff like this…

wall of stickers

Or even the stickers applied to a student’s A+ homework. Something fun or cheap with the purpose of sticking it to random objects. Stickers don’t need any special considerations.

So, what do you see on top of these nail polish bottles? Stickers or Labels?

Nail polish labels

If you answered sticker, think again. While these labels are small and display minimal information, they are a part of the products’ packaging. They convey a brand message and communicate the products’ names, plus, they need to be durable. So, this is a label.

Labels come in all shapes and sizes. Some are minimalistic, displaying a small amount of imagery or information if any. If it has been created for a brand to be used on packaging, it is a label.

Other ways to determine whether it is a sticker or a label:

Sticker
  • Only consists of an image
  • Does not come attached to a product
  • Does not adhere to packaging information requirement standards
  • Promotional giveaways intended for personal use
Label
  • Displays industry information such as
    • GMO information
    • Cruelty-free logos
    • Nutritional information
    • Safety symbols
    • “Made in” or “grown in” country location information
  • Displays a brand name
  • Displays a title, or name of the product
  • Convey the location in which the product was made
  • Come in a variety of label stocks such as thick wine stock and clear film stock
  • Uses innovative labeling techniques
  • Uses of smart labeling technologies

Digital Vs. Flexographic Printing

If labels are printed on a flexographic press, does that mean stickers are printed on a digital printing press? Not necessarily. So, let’s clarify why there is a difference between the two processes.

Let me first give you a quick overview of the flexographic and digital printing processes.

The flexographic press uses plates to imprint the design onto the label stock with ink. A digital printer uses inkjet or lasers to print the image onto the label stock. The processes are different, but they both result in the same product. Labels are created using both the flexo and digital press. Stickers and labels aren’t different because of how they’re made, they’re different because of what they’re used for.

How can using the correct terminology impact my business?

Searching for information on labeling options is a lot easier to find when you aren’t looking for stickers on Google. Even if you aren’t ready for advanced design options such as labeling innovations or smart labeling technology, it’s important that you understand what the industry has to offer and how you can develop your packaging. Stickers don’t often use foiling, embossing or other innovative techniques. Labels do. When developing your product line, put your best foot forward.

Labels are constructed to be durable, long-lasting, and high quality. Represent your brand with the best packaging options designed to last while your customers use your product. While stickers are not created to withstand heat, water, ice or UV light, labels are. The perfect example of this is our WetStick label which uses advanced adhesive chemistry. It’s so effective at water resistance that it can be applied underwater. A sticker doesn’t need to even be moisture wicking.

Does Great Lakes Label offer bumper stickers?

All that being said, Great Lakes Label has the capability of creating bumper stickers. This is the only exception to our rule. Bumper stickers do require the durability that we offer for labels, including water resistance. You’ll also see that with the below sticker, it is peeled off from the center, unlike standard stickers for kids. This example is a little more complex of an order than with standard stickers, making it ideal to be printed with a company who can offer a durable, unique product.

Get Inspired: Bold Color Schemes

Bold color is a simple way to catch the customers’ eyes. It’s also a great way to create a line of products that look cohesive, yet stand apart. So, get inspired by these concepts that use bold color in striking ways.

This line of juice is influenced by outdoor adventures. As a result, the mountainous watermarks, canteen-shaped bottle and wildlife motifs all drive this point home. The colors even perfectly fit with this theme. So, the green grass, bright yellow sunlight, warm red and orange glow of the fire. It’s all there. Rodriguez’ desire was to transport the customers to a cleaner airspace using these associations.

The organic nature of the font style and text layout mimics the hilly Tasmanian vineyard landscape. The bright orange color choice seems to imply the bright sunny nature of a summertime vineyard. The orange isn’t overwhelming due to the minimalistic nature of the design. This design goes to show that you don’t need to create something overwhelming to create something bold.

The animals on the Boost vitamin water bottles represent the attribute the water encourages.  These individual markers for the flavors work well with the colors of each bottle. Like the other examples, the singular color used for every flavor makes it easy to differentiate them from each other. Incorporating foiling over the animals would be a great way to add dimension without incorporating more colors into the scheme.
