Mental Wellness Trending in Luxury Label Design

Mental Wellness Trending in Luxury Label Design

Mental Wellness is a trend we explored over on our Label Gator blog for horticulture labeling. What we’re seeing in that market is a shift toward creating plant-filled spaces for breaths of fresh air. Whether it encourages meditation, yoga, or simply a quiet mind, it’s something that will continue to grow in 2018.

The meditation app, Headspace is valued at roughly $250 million with 11 million downloads. What does that tell you? Well, for starters, that this isn’t a passing trend. Much like yoga has prevailed and grown in popularity in the western world over the years, so does meditation.

Why Mental Wellness Makes Sense For Luxury Label Design

Self-care is a part of our global lexicon. Instead of pushing on, people are learning to step back and pause for a moment. With the cell phone addictions and the technology-obsessed world, stepping back allows for mindfully moving forward.

Luxury products feed the self-care routine in many cases. A luxurious, handcrafted glass of wine to sip and savor. A beauty routine built to slow down and care for one’s own skin. Or, even an extra special snack while watching movies. They all incorporate products into the mindfulness routine. While the luxury market increases and mental wellness turns from a trend to a way of life, combine the concepts.

How Luxury Labels Can Incorporate Mindfulness Themes

How do your customers use your product? Is there a scenario where they use it to unwind? If so, work with that. If not, do market research to make sure your assumption is, in fact, correct. Think big picture. Think out of the box. Or, think about all possibilities before dismissing the idea that your product won’t help your customers in that way.

You sell tires. That doesn’t scream self-care, but where can tires take you? To the beach? To go hiking? Or, to a quiet cottage up north? Use a label to remind your customers what your product offers them. Show them how your product will reconnect them to their sense of calm.

Labeling Technology’s Impact

Connect with your customers in a variety of ways. Use RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), NFC (Near Field Communication), or simple and free QR codes. Link customers to self-care routines involving your product right there in the grocery store aisle. Also offer video content, blogs, apps, and anything else designed to improve their quality of life.

Anything you can do to add extra value for your customers will position your brand as a thought leader. It will also position you as thoughtful a brand that cares. Show customers how your product lets them get back to enjoying life.

Connect With Hashtags

Looking to create a global community? Create a hashtag where your customers can go to share stories, recipes, meditation koans, or pictures of beautiful vistas where they’ve enjoyed your product. Then follow through. Use the responses to engage directly with customers and share inspirational thoughts, positive vibes, and personalized recommendations. Mindfulness is about human to human and earth to human connection. It’s not about material possession, so as hard as that may be for a brand, it’s your responsibility to move past it. Create a personal touch with your brand at every level.

Haptic labeling is labeling that engages customers’ senses. So, when a customer picks up your packaging and feels the Soft Touch coating, it reminds them of positive memories and subconsciously makes them more comfortable. The opening and closing of the resealable facial wipes above snaps them into the present moment while they smell the incredible and relaxing scent.

Create Your Design From A Genuine Place

The mental wellness way of life is not about material possessions, so creating an impactful label design seems inherently counterintuitive. Work with that thought for a second. Evaluate how your product makes a positive impact on someone. Again, do market research if need be. Just consider how your label works with your product to make life easier. Envision aspirational places your product may take them. Or, if all else fails, use innovative labeling techniques to take your customers to another place right there in the aisle of the grocery store.

The old advertising tactics of making a person feel incomplete without your product are not welcome here. Don’t connect customers to the Headspace meditation app just because. No, just consider how your product intersects with making a positive influence.

Recycled Stock & Environmentally Conscious Labeling

While not directly related, using sustainable stock is important. It communicates you hold the same values as your customers and their vision to reconnect with the world around us. Luckily, recycled label stock like the above example is an ideal wine stock. Your luxury item is good for the environment and it conveys luxury. It also is arguably providing a haptic texture for customers to enjoy. It’s win-win-win.

So, with that said, don’t stop at the words on your label when designing for mental wellness. How does every single element factor in? It’s more than standing out from your competition. Instead, it’s about creating a lasting relationship with your customers. It’s also about creating labels that make a positive impact on people. It’s about helping people to feel more human, more inspired, and living more presently.

Tell A Story With (Or On) Your Label
by

Tell A Story With (Or On) Your Label

Every company has a story. In fact, every company has many stories. There’s the history of the brand as a whole as well as all the smaller, more specific stories along the way. On top of these personal anecdotes, there are the stories worth sharing that have nothing to do with your brand’s development. Instead, the story’s purpose is to connect with your customers on a deeper level.

So, what kind of stories are we talking about?

There’s story of why the customer is using your product, there’s folklore, and pop culture references that represent your company’s branding. Or, even the story customers make up for your brand when they look at your label. Haptic labeling techniques play a role in bringing this immersive story to life. More on that later…

Even by controlling the story your packaging tells, you don’t control how your customers will interpret it. Instead, you communicate your core principles. You develop an overall impression of the company’s capabilities, focus, and what drives it forward. It connects your brand to your customers on a deeper level right there in the grocery store aisle. Instant impact.

Tell a Story On Your Packaging With or Without Words

Uncle Ray’s potato chips are the perfect example of a brand using packaging space to write a story. Each flavor offers a different piece of the puzzle, enticing customers to buy another bag. Better still, each short story provides a clear picture of Ray and his core values as a business owner. You get to know the person while you get to know the brand.

Stories don’t have to be told with words, however. Take a look at the above R&D label designed by Great Lakes Label. This design features a local photographer’s beautiful image of a lighthouse on one of Michigan’s Great Lakes. Imagine being a Michigan-based customer looking at this label in-store. The picture communicates that the brand supports local artists, is a proud Michigan business, hopes that you, the buyer, will feel relaxed and carefree when drinking. It’s as though you’re at this beach just by using the product.

These three pieces of story-oriented information are communicated with single a glance. That is the power of using impactful imagery. In this case, it’s only effective for Michiganders, but never the less, the principles still apply for a national or international product release.

Add A Linked Story With Technology

QR codes are a free and simple method for linking your customers to content on your website. Instead of telling stories with words, or pictures, tell yours with video. A simple behind the scenes look at how the product their holding was made provides the customer with valuable insight and builds the brand’s relationship with them.

Other innovative labeling technologies such as NFC (Near Field Communication) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) are used to provide customers with a more seamless experience. When NFC is turned on on a customer’s phone, they are automatically linked to the page of your choosing. This happens the second their phone comes in contact with the product’s label. Instead of downloading a QR code reader, the process is streamlined.

How Craft Beer Brands Excel At Storytelling in Their Label Designs

Craft breweries are masters at incorporating storytelling into label design. Take a look at the three Perrin labels above. Do they give you a sense of the company’s brand? Their fun, playful, rebellious style with brewing? Each label is vastly different. Different colors, graphics, art styles. Yet, there’s a connecting thread. The story they’re telling. With clear direction, customers will see the message too. Even on a subconscious level, customers will be drawn to the stories they relate to.

This also means that a broad story isn’t a strong story. Pinpoint what your brand’s principles are and show them off. This may connect to a broad group of people, and each person will interpret it differently, but the message is at least connecting with shoppers. Broad stories lack direction and will attract fewer people.

Use Innovative Labeling Techniques to Enhance Your Story

As the luxury market increases, the use of innovative labeling techniques also increases in popularity. The use of foiling, embossing, or any other technique shows customers that an immense amount of care is put into creating the product. This is why labeling techniques are becoming more popular for handcrafted items as well. Since it’s hard to visualize the impact of various techniques, we’ve created a blog to show you what a difference it makes.

Okay, so what do the below labels tell you? Does this tequila feel expensive? Handcrafted? Unique? Perhaps you’re envisioning a special occasion it would be perfect for. Or, maybe you see a specific person in mind. Someone who would love to open a bottle up as a gift. It’s all about igniting their imagination. Make it so that shoppers can’t resist picking up your product and examining the label.

The techniques support the stories customers see when they look at your product. This is because it elevates your brand and fully encapsulates the appeal to the product. When the labels are effective, so is the ability to connect with your customers with a single glance. It also helps that techniques like MotionCoat and Cast & Cure shimmer in the light.

What story are you telling?

Top 3 Labeling Trends For 2018
by

Top 3 Labeling Trends For 2018

The new year is here and it’s time to unveil our top 3 trend predictions for 2018. So, use these growing trends to develop your brand and create packaging that outshines your competition. As a result, the common thread among all trends is transparent communication. Whether that’s telling customers about the label stock, creating open processes, or even clear branding, it’s all there.

3. Sustainable Label Stock to Grow in 2018

moya wine label - wine traders - great lakes label 2018

Sustainable label stock such as this 30% recycled paper stock grew in popularity throughout 2017. So, as new packaging materials develop, sustainable stocks become more and more of a popular choice.  Both Avery Dennison and Wausau Coated offer various options, including stocks that are also FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) compliant.

2. Traceability For Accountability at Every Level

GS1 Traceability is an internal process which uses labeled packages and crates to communicate production progress. As a result, any business partners you have, including us, are accountable for their work and development with the order.

Labeling technology such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and even NFC (Near Field Communication) create simple, streamlined processes that create clear communication between the customer and the brand. While labeling technology advances businesses internally, externally it also enhances the customer experience. The technology links shoppers to even more content from the brand. Brands are increasingly creating helpful apps, video content, and blog content to share on their labels in this manner.

3 Things to Immediately do About Your Labels
by

3 Things to Immediately do About Your Labels

Whether you’ve used your label design for years, or you have just started creating it, here are 3 things to immediately do about them. By making these changes, you will engage with customers on a deeper level, and most importantly, increase sales. Let’s go back to the drawing board and look at your designs with a fresh perspective.

graphic designer immediately working on label design

1. Go Above & Beyond To Help Customers

Your product exists to help customers, but go the extra mile to provide them with a product that makes their lives easier. There have been many smart packaging innovations, so don’t fall behind your competition. Update your label to create apps, videos, blogs and other content that enhances the customer experience. Go beyond the grocery aisle and find a way to engage once people take your product home.

2. Immediately Incorporate Techniques To Draw Attention

Innovative labeling techniques are the best way to create an eye-catching design. Take your already established label to the next level by foiling details like the title or background. If you haven’t started your design yet, bold techniques such as the holographic Cast & Cure are the way to go. When it comes to design, don’t play it safe. The bolder, the more unique, the better.

Techniques provide labels with a luxury look as well. This is important if your product is luxurious, or if you’re in an industry where luxury is king. The beauty industry is a good example of this. While your product may not be luxurious, keeping up with those big brands is important.

3. Use Labeling Technology To Your Advantage

Labeling technology is quickly developing into a game changer. Consider how it can be incorporated into your design to create clear communication at every step in the production and selling process. This will make it easier on the back end to create a quality product and meet shoppers’ demands. On the front end, provide customers with helpful information (see point 1).

Multimedia Label Marketing Takes Over
by

Multimedia Label Marketing Takes Over

Multimedia label marketing involves a link between a label and content. Whether it’s NFC (Near Field Communication), QR codes or GS1 Mobile Scan, enhance the customer experience. Provide them with your website, product information, videos or social media links and make a connection.

Multimedia Labels Worth Scanning

We’ve previously looked at ways that smart labeling was developing. While a QR code remains a classic method of connecting people to further content, new methods are emerging. NFC is a form of label technology that allows customers to scan the label merely by holding up their phone to it. The customer doesn’t need to lift a finger for more information which enhances their experience. The less time fumbling with a phone, the better.

Another method that is quickly developing into a favorite is the GS1 Mobile Scan. As their web page states, “GS1 US Mobile Scan-enabled packages have a DWCodeTM, a nearly invisible digital watermark that can be read by enabled POS scanning systems and smartphones.”

This is groundbreaking innovation.

Imagine how much more thorough you can be with customer engagement throughout the sale life cycle! Create supplementary apps, video tutorials, or DIY project blog posts to provide the customer with a lifestyle. Packaging goes beyond pretty design. Now, more than ever, packaging needs to enhance the customer’s life.

While this may seem geared toward fun and whimsy, it also has practical uses. For food products, it makes it easier for people with dietary restrictions and allergies to find what they’re looking for. For vegetarians and vegans, this goes beyond food. Clothing, beauty, and food are the primary industries that keep vegans and vegetarians on their toes. Now, they have all the information they need at their fingertips for cruelty-free and animal product free items.

Avoid Counterfeiting With Innovation & Consistency
by

Avoid Counterfeiting With Innovation & Consistency

Counterfeiting developed as a big business over the last few decades. According to the International Chamber of Commerce, the projected value of global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods in 2015 was $1.77 trillion. Gray market goods ranging from designer handbags to automotive parts to pharmaceuticals. No product is immune from the threat any longer.

Labeling Technology

Take, for example, over-the-counter and prescription medicine. The product packaging looked practically identical but had listed inaccurate ingredients or was missing information such as lot numbers, in recent cases of counterfeiting. Holograms will remain an authentication technology while radio frequency identification (RFID) technology will continue to see high growth rates. Product traceability systems, smart labels, and smart caps are also increasing in popularity to help track product safety and quality through the production process and supply chain (where counterfeiting can occur).

Pharma Label with Counterfeiting Preventative Techniques

There are a number of other ways packaging design can help. Unique packaging can assist a brand in standing out on the shelf, as well as make it more difficult to counterfeit. Custom packaging that incorporates new materials or shapes is harder to replicate. Quick response (QR) codes, help with both counterfeiting and consumer engagement. To verify the manufacturer of a product and be directed to a brand owner’s website for more information, a customer scans a code with their smartphone. In this way, the brand can build consumer trust and has an opportunity to engage with a customer online.

Personalization To Counter Counterfeiting

In the pharmaceutical market, where an estimated 10% to 30% of drugs from developed markets are counterfeit, personalized packaging on medication is a growing option for manufacturers. Medication will come labeled to the individual with warnings based on the person’s medical history and existing medications. Produce the label and instructions in a larger font too for an easier read.

Color Consistency is Key

Getting color right on logos or brand packaging actually help to protect consumers from gray market copies. A Pantone Color Institute study found that 97% of adults will reach past the first product on the shelf. Over half of the respondents said they reach past the first product due to discoloration. In the same study, two-thirds of adults stated they question the quality of the product due to discoloration.
