Quick Change Die System (QCDS)

One of the main features of the press is the Quick Change Die System (or QCDS). This system even allows for die changes in an ergonomic process without the use of a hoist. So, with the QCDC, a die can be changed in approximately 30 seconds, reducing change-over time by 80%. For even more information, see the below video.

QCDC (Quick Change Die Cut) – Mark Andy Performance Series

Mark Andy QCDC technology was developed to remove the bottleneck of long die cut changeovers and slower matrix stripping speeds. The unique cassette and cart combination allow the operator to load the die off-line, then conveniently load it into the die station without the use of a hoist.

New Food Labeling Regulations
by

New Food Labeling Regulations

New food labeling regulations are being set in place and will be required from July 2018, onward. Not sure you know what regulations these are? See below.

New Food Labeling Regulations

  • Clear information on product’s calories
  • Clear identification of added sugars such as fructose and corn syrup
  • Labeling of nutritional content

Panchy Juice Drink - New Food Labeling Regulations Example

Okay, so now you know what you need to include, but what can you do to maintain design balance?

Start by taking an assertive approach. Leaving these inclusions to the last minute could seriously harm your shelf appeal. Complying for the sake of compliance is different than seeing these changes as an opportunity for design growth.

Once you begin the redesign process, you may find it is more complex than just adding the new information. The balance or focus on your label may be changed. Look for solutions that help draw the eye right where you want it. Maybe that means including labeling techniques such as foiling or embossing. Or, you may find a booklet style label helpful in giving you more space to include these new requirements. The Tri-Panel Label is an example of this innovation.

If these new regulations showcase your product in a negative light, to a point where customers will turn away, this is an issue beyond redesign. If your product needs to be redeveloped, then these regulations can be proudly displayed front and center. You might even be developing a redesign for a product that could benefit from displaying this information. Regardless, you have competitors who will stand out because of this new adjustment, and that’s something to keep in mind moving forward.

Do these new food labeling regulations affect your brand? Learn labeling basics and discover the right solution for your brand by downloading our e-book, The Label Project Guide.

How Long Will Packaging Trends Last?
by

How Long Will Packaging Trends Last?

The labeling industry is one which looks at current packaging trends and uses them as design guidelines. What if you spend time designing a label to suit current trends, right as the industry moves on? It is confusing to figure out what is fleeting and what trends are setting a standard.

People meeting at table, writing on paper - packaging trendsThis topic was originally brought up in this Packaging News article and it’s worth taking a look at what trends are here to stay.

New Generations Setting Packaging Trends

Firstly, there’s power in understanding the next generation’s needs.  These are, after all, becoming more and more prominent customers. The more they make purchases, the more they set standards and elevate the industry.

Point blank, create an immersive experience. Discover what the customer needs, and incorporate ways to help customers beyond the product’s use.

What exactly does that mean?

Let’s say organic fruit juice is your product.  You are conveying the health benefits of organic fruit in your diet. Why not take that a step further? Connect customers to original recipes that pair well with your juice, or work out routines to enhance their healthy lifestyle.

Customers will be more likely to have a personal connection with your brand and see your product as enhancing their well-being. Taking an empathetic stance on your design is going to be a trend that not only sticks but grows.

Labeling Techniques

The latest and greatest labeling techniques may seem like a temporary fad, but using these innovations will never fail to draw attention. Currently, the luxury market is increasing. You may feel that using techniques such as foiling or embossing is only important when trying to keep up with your competition. Once luxury packaging becomes less popular, your labels can take a step back, right?

When your competition isn’t enhancing their labels in this way, it becomes an opportunity to stand out. Take their modest label design as a sign to step up to the plate and fascinate customers.

Strong Design

A strong use of design principles never goes out of style. Incorporating the rules of good design into your label and designing the art to fit production needs will set your packaging up for success. Respecting the rules of balance, color, and brand integrity is always on trend.

top 5 labeling innovations of 2016 infographic

1. Technology & Accessibility

Braille Labels

A fantastic way to create a more inclusive label is by adding braille. Because it can simply be added using tactile coating. Braille helps potential customers understand your product as well as makes it accessible.

Smart Labels

Smart labels primarily use RFID technology. These labels aid the customer in getting the most out of their purchase. Instead of the standard, it creates a more engaging, personal, helpful experience.

Booklet-Style Labels

Booklet-style labels open up to reveal more information in addition to the front panel. This technique is perfect for the horticulture label since it can require a lot of information on caring for a plant. Tri-Panel labels come in many shapes and sizes also. Contact us for more information.

2. Adjusting to Anti-Packaging

Edible Packaging

Developments have been made to create packaging out of milk proteins. This discovery may also be instrumental in the anti-packaging movement. Which, if you haven’t heard yet, is a movement geared toward eliminating packaging. Therefore, it aims to create a more sustainable future.

Sustainable Materials

In addition, materials that are biodegradable are coming to the forefront. So are labeling materials that come from sustainable sources. All of this progress aims for a greener world instead of a disposable oriented one.

3. Minimalism

Label Design

Minimalistic label design has been a hot trend for a while now. So, naturally, this design style has been as strong as ever in 2016. This simplification takes the focus away from flashy images and onto the product.

Packaging

In lieu of the anti-packaging movement, removing unnecessary packaging has become a hot topic. Many find this wasteful and unnecessary. Some claim it helps keep produce fresh. It seems as innovations are made in packaging materials, this side of the industry may go through some significant changes.

4. A New Generation

Gen Z Personalizes Shopping

Gen Z is a generation that thrives off of personal interactions, especially online. This generation is shaping the way we label and package products. Using smart technology can be instrumental in getting that personal touch.

5. Luxury Style

Techniques Improve Rising Trend

The luxury packaging market is increasing. With it, labeling techniques become important in making your product stand out.  From embossing to foiling, to MotionCoat, we have something for every luxury item.

Smart Packaging Moves Beyond QR Codes
by

Smart Packaging Moves Beyond QR Codes

Smart packaging is shaping the future of beauty products. While smart packaging is appropriate for all industries, the cosmetic industry seems to be starting to use this labeling technology at a faster rate.

La Roche-Posay My UV Patch

This patch applies directly to the skin and the technology is so flexible that it bends with the skin with ease. It monitors the customers’ UV levels so that they can reapply sunscreen at the perfect moment. By scanning the patch with your phone, a wide array of information pops up. This is not only a masterful way of creating a personal experience with your product, but it could save lives.

Shape Matters Palette from Smashbox

This palette is unique because it comes with cards you can swipe to get personalized tips on how to apply makeup. This concept is similar to ideas posed in our blog on catering to Gen Z. Creating videos that break down the barrier between brand and consumer is important in building that relationship. It creates a dynamic that the brand is truly there for the customer in every stage of their purchase.

How can your brand utilize smart packaging?

Smart packaging is all about the consumer experience. It’s the “me factor.” What can you do to create an immersive experience that builds a relationship between your brand and your shoppers?

When designing your packaging, consider what you can do to keep the relationship going after point of sale and to provide the best possible service. Utilize videos and apps to create that personal bond. The more customized the information, the better.

Consumers are looking to learn how to apply beauty products properly. Helping them on their way keeps their eyes on your brand instead of someone else’s.

Produce Packaging Makes Customers Lose Interest
by

Produce Packaging Makes Customers Lose Interest

According to scientists at Wageningen University in Wageningen, Netherlands, customers are uninterested in produce packaging. When fresh fruit and vegetables go packaging free, sales increase. This is due to the ease of checking ripeness and environmental concerns. A customer wants to know they are putting their money where their morals are.

So, what can you do with produce packaging?

As we mentioned in a previous blog on anti-packaging, this will likely not be the end of the packaging industry. With edible packaging in development and water dissolvable labels, the item can retain it’s freshness longer or be more accessible to be checked. This also means that customers have access to labeling regulations. It even provides extra space for more information.

no produce packaging

GMI labeling laws keep developing, which requires labeled produce. If this ends up being the case, finding a compromise between the anti-packaging movement and the current standards will be crucial. As mentioned above, there may even be edible packaging that could aid in this transition.

On top of all of this, better utilize the small labels fruit use. It’s small real estate, but an important one. Instead of packaging the produce, the label then conveys further information on proper handling. Or, use the label to display the harvest date or even the date it arrived in store.

Why is it important?

Creating transparency between the customer and business is important. Customers are looking for products that align with convenience, freshness and ethical procedures. This could be an opportunity to take their concerns and transform it into yet another reason to buy your produce.

What Does Edible Packaging Mean For Labeling?
by

What Does Edible Packaging Mean For Labeling?

We previously discussed what might happen if anti-packaging becomes more popular. One of the things mentioned is that packaging and labeling materials would evolve into more environmentally friendly materials such as edible materials. Soon we may be living in a world where you can eat the product and its packaging.

The USDA is creating an edible milk based packaging material.

Edible Milk Protiein Based Packaging

Milk proteins make up this material. It will be biodegradable, sustainable and be better at preserving food. It is even 500x better at keeping oxygen out! This means your produce will last longer and taste fresher.

Developments could lead to individually wrapped pouches of coffee that easily dissolve in water. It may also be developed into a spray for cereal to keep it crunchy without using the high in sugar formula we use currently.

However, will it still require supplementary packaging to ensure the edible film is sanitary? There are, however, many packages that already have this two layered system that could benefit from this milk based advancement. It could be as simple as adding a label warning about eating this type of packaging. Otherwise, the inclusion of an edible label could be a convenient step if used inside another package.

This may not be the end all and be all of green packaging, but this innovation is a big step in the right direction. In fact, even if the anti-packaging movement becomes the standard, plastic gloves are still required to handle products. Developing materials like this could eliminate the need for plastics in all grocery stores. Balance between health safety, green innovations and customer convenience are key in the development of new materials.

See the below YouTube video for more information on this milk protein based film.

Edible, Biodegradable Food Packaging – Headline Science

Most foods come wrapped in plastic packaging. This type of packaging creates a lot of waste and aren’t that great at preventing spoilage. Researchers are now developing a biodegradable film made from milk proteins to hopefully solve these problems.
