Pharmaceutical serialization is quickly becoming a hot packaging topic. We’ve previously looked at developments in pharma and also clear pharmaceutical labeling, but today we dive into new regulations which will help prevent counterfeiting. So, for specific information on these changes, check out this Tracelink page.
A Summary of Pharmaceutical Serialization
- As per Tracelink website, “DSCSA requires that manufacturers mark packages with a product identifier, serial number, lot number, and expiration date by November 2017”
- This deadline for packagers is November 2018
- This deadline for distributors is November 2019
- This serialization will be carried out using the GS1 standard
What can you do to prepare?
Firstly, get trained and set up with GS1 in order to create clear communication between all parties involved in the lifespan of your product.
As a result, it’s time to focus on your labels and application process. As a result, labeling your serial number clearly is crucial, but so is working efficiently to label your shipping containers.
